As well as being an award-winning artist, I've written five watercolour books. Whether you’re new to watercolour or already a confident artist, these video-based online courses teach you step-by-step how to go from a blank page to creating a piece of art which expresses yourself.

You will also find free tips and tricks, along with digital downloads on this site, so do keep coming back.

Why learn with me?

I've been in your shoes. When my son was born I went from working in a demanding international job to being at home and desperately needing a creative outlet. I was lucky enough to find a watercolour class and utterly fell in love with the medium. I went through ups and downs of trying to learn the medium and find my own style. I want to condense that 20 years of learning for you.

Each course is filmed in my studio, not on a fancy set with clever camera angles. The aim is to give you as close an experience as possible to sitting alongside me as we paint.

Otter in line and wash

Otters are a joyous subject to paint in line and wash. In this course we will explore using scribble mark making to capture their playful nature and energy. We will add washes of flowing watercolour to enhance the drawing, ensuring that both ink and paint contributes completely to the end result. Along the way we will learn many transferable skills, which will help you grow as a watercolourist.

Cat Portraits in Watercolour

Cats have been our constant companions for thousands of years. Their unique combination of independence, aloofness and softness fascinates us, so it is natural that we want to capture their character in paint. In this workshop we will explore how to create lively and exciting portraits of our feline friends using glowing washes of transparent watercolour.

Painting the light - watercolours on black

Have you seen black watercolour paper and wondered what it is all about? You might think you can’t possibly work on black with your usual watercolours. This course shows you it’s time to see watercolour in a new light! Instead of painting shadows, we will paint light. Using our favourite colours and effects, we will retain the essence of watercolour while working on this new surface.

Turtle Ink Resist

Ink resist or gouache wash off technique is an exciting way of producing beautiful images which look akin to wood block prints. Using the unique properties of gouache and Indian ink, you will be introduced to the materials and techniques before applying them to a painting of a turtle. At the end you will have the knowledge and confidence to work on any subject of your choosing.

Painting animals in watercolour

The wonderful variety of animal and bird life means that you will never be short of inspiration. No wonder animal painting is so popular. This course is based on my best-selling book (Painting Animals in Watercolour). We explore eyes, shape, texture and tone before completing a step by step portrait of a cheeky donkey. The exercises and techniques build confidence for you to produce portraits full of life and energy.

Painting birds in watercolour

Free as a bird! We are so in awe of them that we want to paint their beauty, but how can we do that without rendering every feather and detail? How can we capture the very essence of the bird and flight? This comprehensive course gives you the skills, experience and confidence to depict the character and behaviour of 'things with wings' in loose expressive watercolour.

Line and wash painting

Line and wash is where drawing and painting meet. It combines the strength and impact of ink, with the softness and transparency of watercolour. At its best the combination is far more than a coloured in line drawing or an outlined painting. In this extensive course you will learn all about the different combinations of line and wash, using buildings, portraits, animals, flowers and still life as your inspiration.

Comments about Liz's online courses

I really like your no-nonsense approach and honesty. I like the fact that I learn something - or many things - and that the sessions are not overly prescriptive, i.e. paint by numbers.

I also like that you use a sensible selection of colours and paper, and are able to suggest alternatives, so I don’t feel I am being forced to buy yet more expensive stuff!

I have been taking my time with the course I signed up for and have not yet attempted the final painting. I have found all of the lessons very useful but my favourite, and most helpful, was the lesson on painting eyes. I am pleased to say I was quite happy with the results.

I have really enjoyed the course and find that your instructions are very clear. So pleased that you do courses in this way particularly given limited travel opportunities over the last year.
