Ink resist / gouache wash off

If you love the strength of ink against delicacy of watercolour washes, or just like learning unusual techniques, then ink resist or gouache wash off, is for you. It certainly exploits the very best of ink and watercolour.

It is a painterly technique which produces an image similar to a wood or lino cut. Though the process is exacting and needs to be followed carefully, the end result is unpredictable and exciting.

You will be introduced to this way of painting, and we will do a small warm up piece to check that your materials work well together. Then there is a full step-by-step project based around the ancient landscape of the Ridgeway Path in the Chilterns.

Remember
  • You have lifetime access

What is ink resist all about?

Do you like the mix of ink and watercolour in line and wash? Are you an artist who likes to experiment with new techniques? Have you heard of ink resist?

Gouache wash off or ink resist, is an exciting technique where gouache is used to protect the paper from a coat of waterproof Indian ink. The whole creation is then washed and, indeed, scrubbed under running water. The end result is an image reminiscent of a wood block print.

In this course you will be taken through this exacting technique in a short warm up exercise, so that you can understand how it works and check that your materials can withstand the abuse of the process.

We will then work on the ancient landscape of the ancient Ridgeway path, which runs through the Chilterns. This is a full length demonstration of the entire process from planning, through to the big reveal and final adjustments.

This is the closest you can come to sitting alongside me in my studio and I will share as many tips and ideas as possible.

If you have enjoyed this course and share the work you've done on it, please make sure to tag me on social media (@lizchaderton on Instagram and /lizchadertonartist on Facebook) so I can get to see it too! It would be great if you could say that it is from this course, as that helps spread the word.

If you are not a member already, why not join Watercolour Studio over on Facebook? https://www.facebook.com/groups/694706731930461 And finally, you should not exhibit or display pieces completed on this course without my written permission, to comply with copyright law. Ridgeway: starting to paint

Painting with gouache is quite a slow process, as you need to apply the paint thick enough to resist the ink. This is a full length demonstration, so if you get bored of watching me paint, do feel free to fast forward!
