Ink and watercolour on a textured canvas - kingfishers

  • Course
  • 22 Lessons

If you have already experienced the excitement of working in watercolour on canvas and want to experiment further, this course is for you. It takes three modules from the longer 'Painting Watercolours on Canvas' course and makes them available to the more experienced practitioner.

By using an under painting of Indian Ink we can overcome the issue of layers lifting. By using a textured surface, we can introduce a 3D element. It really is a beautiful combination.

Remember:
  • You have lifetime access
  • You can start whenever you want
  • You can repeat each lesson as many times as you wish
  • Reference photos and clear instructions are included throughout
  • You are invited to join a friendly Facebook Group to share your work or ask questions:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/694706731930461

Is this course for you? Watch this introduction to see.

Please note that this course is made up of three modules from 'Painting Watercolours on Canvas' bundled separately. It is aimed at artists who have already done some watercolour work on canvas and do not want the warm up exercises or the structured learning offered by the longer course, but just want to get stuck straight in! If you have bought Painting Watercolours on Canvas do NOT buy this course, as it is a repeat!

If you have already experimented on canvas and want to try ink and watercolour now, or try working on a heavily textured surface, you will enjoy this course. In the first module, I will show you my favourite way of preparing a highly textured surface, we will then experiment with Indian ink, before painting a beautiful pair of kingfishers. The final module reminds you about sealing and finishing your work.

It is intended to be as close as possible to sitting next to me in my studio learning.

This is not a beginner's watercolour on canvas course, but is suitable for those who have at least a little to a lot of experience in painting watercolour on a prepared canvas.

If you have enjoyed this course and share the work you've done on it, please make sure to tag me on social media (@lizchaderton on Instagram and /lizchadertonartist on Facebook) so I can get to see it too! It would be great if you could say that it is from this course, as that helps spread the word.

If you are not a member already, why not join Watercolour Studio over on Facebook? https://www.facebook.com/groups/694706731930461 And finally, you should not exhibit or display pieces completed on this course without my written permission, to comply with copyright law. I really look forward to seeing what you do.

Preparing the textured canvas

If you are doing this course you will already know about using watercolour ground to prepare your own canvases. In this module I show you a few ways to prepare a textured surface which will bring a new element to your work. My current favourite is using tissue paper and watercolour ground, which is the one I concentrate on here. Though we will use it for painting kingfishers, I find it a great surface for many different subjects, from woodland scenes, to seascapes, to architectural studies.

How to layer successfully on canvas - using Indian ink - kingfishers

Waterproof Indian ink and watercolour gives us another option for overcoming the lifting/layering challenge, by using the ink as an under painting. We explore how it behaves and then use the textured canvas from module 8 to create a beautiful study of two kingfishers. Of course, if you do not wish to use a textured surface you can do this painting on a flat one. It will still be wonderful!

Please note that not all black ink is waterproof - please check that yours is!

Sealing and finishing

We have seen throughout the course that watercolour lifts very easily from canvas. We don't want to hide our paintings behind glass, so how can we protect, frame and hang our work to show it off?
